Is your backyard in need of a little sprucing up or a complete makeover?

Have you longed for a thriving native Hawaiian forest around your home, but are not sure where to begin?

The folks at the Volcano Art Center will host another Backyard Forest Restoration Workshop led by professional botanist Tim Tunison on Aug. 25 to help you get started on creating a dream backyard perfectly suited for Hawaii.

After examining award-winning results inside the Niaulani Rain Forest, attendees are invited to explore Tunison’s own backyard in Volcano Village, where he is in the early stages of restoring it to a native forest habitat.

“I explain the nuts and bolts of weed control, how to do it safely and not harm native plants intermixed with weeds,” explained Tunison. “We also discuss how to identify a target forest community to model efforts after, and the difference between true ecological restoration, replacement communities and general horticultural landscaping.”

Backyard Forest Restoration will run from from 9:30 a.m.-2:30 p.m. at the VAC Niaulani Campus. Tuition is $15, with all proceeds going toward Niaulani Rain Forest restoration efforts. For more information, visit www.volcanoartcenter.org. Register at 967-8222 or info@volcanoartcenter.org.
